Sophia University International Exchange Program - Spring or Fall

Defining characteristics:
Sophia University is renowned for its international environment! As a student at Sophia University you will be studying along side other international students as well as Japanese nationals in courses which are taught in English.
Seattle University students participate in an exchange program with Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan with full credit and financial aid privileges.
Academics:
The university's focus is interdisciplinary, including anthropology, sociology, business, geography, art, history, literature, psychology, mathematics, and various language offerings. Sophia course bulletins are available for the Fall 2008 term. More course offerings will be available once they are posted on the Sophia University website.
Because the majority of the classes are taught in English, you can select courses from many different disciplines. Students are required to take a Japanese language course in addition to this coursework. Language classes typically meet each day while other courses will meet twice a week for 90 minute sessions. The fall semester begins early September and commences early February. Spring semester runs from late March to late July.
Credits: Full-time enrollment in 15 semester credits during one semester at Sophia University will earn 22.5 quarter credits towards an SU degree. A year abroad at Sophia university will allow a student to earn 45 quarter credits.
Housing:
Housing options include home stays, on-campus dormitories for men, and off-campus dormitories for women. Prices vary depending upon the living situation chosen.
Costs & Financial Aid:
Spring 2009 cost: $19, 473*
(*This price is an estimated cost for the Spring 2009 program. It does not include airfare, personal travel and activity expenses, passport fees, and emergency funds.)
All Financial aid including SU grants and scholarships apply. The program cost listed includes: Seattle University tuition, medical insurance, books & materials, housing*, self-catered meals*, local transportation, personal items, International Student Identity Card, and visa.
*these prices are based on dormitory style accommodations.
Application Requirements:
• Must have a 3.0 GPA
• Priority is given to students whose major requires a study abroad component and who have taken Japanese at SU
• Priority given to upperclass students
• Previous Asian Studies courses (History, Anthropology, etc) recommended

Sichuan University

Academics
Sichuan University developed the Center of China Studies to specifically address the needs of international students who wish to learn about Chinese language and culture. This program offers a range of courses to meet the academic needs of
students from a variety of academic areas and requires no prior language study.

Courses are offered in:
• Chinese language (intensive and non-intensive)
• Humanities
• Social Sciences
• Environmental Studies
• Arts

Actual courses offered varies each semester depending on student demand. For Spring 2009, the following courses will be available:

All classes included in the Center of China Studies are instructed in English. Language instruction in Mandarin is available each semester with levels ranging from beginner to advanced.

Special Program Features
Home-stay experience with Chinese families

All AsiaLearn participants have the option of spending weekends and holidays with the family of a faculty or staff member of Sichuan University. The home-stay experience provides students with a deeper understanding of Chinese family life and allows for greater cultural interaction and language skill development.

Excursions

Sichuan University provides all AsiaLearn students with activities and excursions to places of significant interest (varies by semester). Some excursions are complimentary and others may have nominal charges.

Example excursions include:

• The Three Kingdom’s Museum and Temple
• Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu’s Residence
• Archaeology Museum of Sanxingdui
• The Panda Research Center
• Leshan Giant Buddha
• Sichuan Opera
• Mt . Emei – one of the four sacred Buddhist mountains in China

AsiaLearn participants may also choose to participate in optional, organized and affordable tours that are designed to be fun and educational. Examples include touring the Tibet Autonomous Region and the Silk Road.

Housing
AsiaLearn students attending Sichuan University are invited to live on-campus in student dormitories. Limited single and twin shared accommodation is available with private bathroom and shower. Bedding, desks, chairs, and Internet access is provided. Cafeterias and local restaurants are within close proximity to the dorms.

Located in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province.
